چکیده
Abstract This study focuses on direct numerical simulation of imbibition, displacement the non-wetting phase by wetting phase, through water-wet carbonate rocks. We simulate multiphase flow in a limestone and compare our results with high-resolution synchrotron X-ray images previously published literature Singh et al. (Sci Rep 7:5192, 2017). use to interpret observed events that cannot be described using conventional metrics such as pore-to-throat aspect ratio. show complex geometry porous media can dictate curvature balance prevents snap-off from happening spite favourable large ratios. also pinned fluid-fluid-solid contact lines lead small ganglia pore walls; we propose this pinning is caused sub-resolution roughness scales less than micron. Our even media, need allow contacts place reproduce experimental results.

Numerical Modelling of Sub-pore Scale Events in Two-Phase Flow Through Porous Media
We use a new volume-of-fluid based finite-volume method to model two-phase flow through simple pore geometries and study the mechanisms controlling two-phase flow at the pore scale. The numerical model is used to study layer flow and snap-off, and investigate the effect of geometry and flow rate on trapping and mobilization of the disconnected ganglia. Furthermore, a new variable, the capillary...
متن کاملA New Approach for Constructing Pore Network Model of Two Phase Flow in Porous Media
Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Af...
متن کاملAbsolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media
Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...
متن کاملTrapping and hysteresis in two-phase flow in porous media: A pore-network study
[1] Several models for two-phase flow in porous media identify trapping and connectivity of fluids as an important contribution to macroscale hysteresis. This is especially true for hysteresis in relative permeabilities. The trapping models propose trajectories from the initial saturation to the end saturation in various ways and are often based on experiments or pore-network model results for ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Three-Phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media
We describe an efficient numerical simulator, based on an operator splitting technique, for three-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media that takes into account capillary forces, general relations for the relative permeability functions and variable porosity and permeability fields. Our numerical procedure combines a non-oscillatory, second order, conservative central difference scheme for th...
